Progress Update: Hove’s First Affordable Homes England Development

PMC Construction are making great progress on the build of an affordable 104-home development in Brighton & Hove.

We are the proud construction partner working alongside Hyde Housing to bring affordable housing to the School Road scheme in Hove.

Steve Cripps, PMC Director, said:

“We have been partnering with Hyde to deliver a number of affordable housing projects in Brighton, Hove and the surrounding areas.”

We have previously worked with Hyde Housing Association for our Culverlands Close project and New Wave, another affordable housing project in Hove.

What Is The Development?

We have been building, brick-by-brick, a mixture of one, two and three bedroom flats and three and five bedroom houses, to meet a range of housing needs.

The development is on the site of former Westerman Industrial Works, a 1950s complex on School Road in West Hove. Work began last month in July 2019.

The original plan for the development aimed to provide 40% affordable homes for purchase and rent. However, thanks to a grant from Homes England, every home in the scheme will be affordable to rent or shared ownership.

60 homes will be affordable rent while the remaining 44 homes will be available for shared ownership. Alongside the 104 homes, there will be office space for small- and medium-sized businesses to rent.

The scheme has brought great opportunity to the wider community. Alongside our other projects in Brighton & Hove and surrounding areas, PMC has been able to employ and empower local people in construction or considering a career in construction.

Mr Cripps commented:

“Through these schemes, we have been able to offer training placements, apprenticeships, school taster days and have employed more than 100 people.”

Work at School Road started in July 2019 with the demolition of the industrial units. All the homes are due to be finished by Autumn 2021.
